Meanjin-based band The Stress of Leisure announce the follow up to 2020\u2019s Faux Wave with It Goes Away With The Heat, set for release on October 4 via Valve Records. The first offering, the fruity angst of Man Who Makes A Racist Comment, is out now.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0Man\u00a0Who Makes A Racist Comment, singer\/guitarist Ian Powne shares, \u2018The Stress\u00a0of Leisure has always been interested in the absurd details of\u00a0life \u2013 aside\u00a0from love \u2013 that often colour how we navigate the world. The band consistently\u00a0writes adjacent to some form of hostility or discomfort,\u00a0whether directly or\u00a0indirectly. The title for us is something that\u2019s been sitting around for at\u00a0least a decade and its currency seems sadly eternal.\u2019<\/p>\n

It Goes\u00a0Away With The Heat\u00a0is a return to the embrace of the\u00a0tropics for The Stress of Leisure. The title is also reflective of the age of\u00a0hyper-politics\u00a0we\u2019re all living through. It\u2019s somewhat post-punk, somewhat\u00a0faux-wave, and unsurprisingly dabbles on the edges of weirdo, as you\u2019d expect\u00a0from this\u00a0quartet.<\/p>\n

Recorded at Phaedra Studios in Coburg,\u00a0Melbourne by John Lee (Mod Con, Blake Scott, Laura Jean), the band opted for a\u00a0rawer more live\u00a0sound reminiscent of early Modern Lovers recordings: minimal\u00a0takes, the right energy throughout. It’s reflective of the rawness in the\u00a0Brisbane music story, the endless humidity, the sweaty passion, the cross\u00a0pollination of punk and other influences.<\/p>\n

\u2018The world feels like it\u2019s moving too rapidly\u00a0and, at the same time, it\u2019s moving much too slowly.\u2019 Pascalle Burton\u00a0(keys\/vocals) notes, \u2018That\u2019s\u00a0one thing the album tries to capture. It reminds\u00a0me of summer storms in Queensland. Full of tension, with brooding heat and\u00a0simmering quiet\u00a0between thunderous and dangerous outbursts. On both a human and\u00a0structural level, I think the songs also probe the impacts of people\u2019s\u00a0actions\u00a0on others.\u2019<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been four years since the pandemic release\u00a0of\u00a0Faux Wave,\u00a0which was a 4ZZZ Album\u00a0of the Week, and received airplay on community radio\u00a0stations across Australia.<\/p>\n
